Mary Johanna “Mary Jo” Swoyer Annand, 60, passed away peacefully in
her brother Ben's arms on Saturday, August 7, 2010, in Alexandria,
Virginia. Born on October 29, 1949, in Tokyo, Japan, as her parents were
serving after World War II as a doctor and nurse, she was the daughter
of Grover Benjamin Swoyer and Mary Kay Corzilius.
She grew up in Charleston, graduating from Charleston High School and
then West Virginia University, where she earned her bachelor's degree in
mathematics and joined the Delta Gamma sorority. She lived in northern
Virginia for 11 years, teaching math at T.C. Williams High School in
Alexandria. She returned to Charleston two years after her first son was
born and immersed herself in the Charleston community; she was an active
member and president of the Junior League, treasurer of Symphony Sunday,
a hard-working PTA member, and well-respected John Adams Junior High
School and George Washington High School math teacher. She moved to
Richmond, Virginia, in 2005, taught math at Deep Run High School, and
was delighted to learn in 2006 that her son, Franklin, would be living
there for three years while attending law school at the University of
Richmond. She moved to Reston, Virginia, and, ultimately, Alexandria,
Virginia, to be close to her son and daughter-in-law, Franklin and
Michelle.
She was a smart, beautiful, talented woman who loved and cared for
her boys. She was a community leader, loving mother, consummate hostess,
and wonderful teacher. She was passionately committed to her ideals and
beliefs and dedicated to taking care of her extended family and anyone
in need of a strong advocate.
She is survived by her two children, son and spouse, Franklin Darley
and Michelle Brown Annand of Alexandria, Virginia; and son, Wesley
Spradlin Annand of Portland, Oregon; and brother, spouse, and children,
Grover Benjamin Swoyer, Meri Beth Braziel, Robert Benjamin Swoyer and
Sienna Pinckney Swoyer.
Memorial services will be held for immediate family today at 10 a.m.
at Father Martin's Ashley in Havre de Grace, Maryland, with her
daughter-in-law's father, the Rev. Maurice E. Brown Jr., officiating.
Condolences may be sent to franklin.annand@gmail.com or 213 N. Payne
